On behalf of the teachers and staff of AFT Local 1481, we’d like to wish Karen Lewis, the President of the Chicago Teacher’s Union (CTU – AFT Local 1), all the best after undergoing emergency surgery. Elected president of the 30,000 member CTU in 2010, Karen helped guide her Union throughout the now famous 2012 citywide strikes, highlighting the need to challenge the ongoing attempt to privatize Chicago’s public schools. She continues to lead her union as it works to unite the city of Chicago—its teachers, school staff members, students, parents, the broader community—as natural allies in support of their schools. Needless to say, her example is an inspiration to all AFT members, as well as to those of the Jefferson Federation of Teachers, AFT 1481.
Please join us in wishing this community builder, public school advocate, national board-certified chemistry teacher, and remarkable union leader all the best as she recovers these next few weeks. AFT members stand together with our Union Family in times of need, and invite our allies in the Daly City, Pacifica, Brisbane, and Colma communities to join us by adding your name to the online Get Well Card.
